How to Build a Positive Culture for ECE Staff

Leah Woodbury By: Leah Woodbury

Creating a positive culture for early childhood education staff is essential to create an environment in which both children and educators can thrive. A supportive workplace boosts staff morale and the quality of care and education provided to the children.

Let’s take a look at how to build and maintain a positive culture for ECE staff!

Schedule Regular Meetings and Foster Open Communication

Encourage feedback! Effective communication is the foundation of any positive workplace culture. Encourage your staff to share their thoughts, ideas and concerns openly. Make sure you’re engaging with your child care center’s employees.

Regular team meetings, suggestion boxes and one-on-one check-ins are great ways to communicate. Make sure to actively listen and act on the feedback received.

As part of communication, remember that transparency in decision-making processes helps build trust. Keep your team informed about changes, policies and the reasons behind them. When staff understand the why  behind decisions, they are more likely to feel valued and included.

Encourage Staff Development

The 2024 Child Care Management Software Industry Trends Report from Procare Solutions found that 30% of early childhood education programs need more professional development for teachers and staff.

Professional development in your child care center is vital to retaining staff. Employee retention rates rise by 30-50% when companies prioritize staff learning.

Investing in professional development shows that you value your staff’s growth and expertise. Offer regular training sessions, workshops and access to educational resources. This enhances their skills while keeping them motivated and engaged.

Also, create clear paths for career advancement within your daycare. Promote from within whenever possible and recognize the achievements of your staff. As child care business expert Beth Cannon says in a Child Care Business Podcast, build your leadership bench from within.

Providing opportunities for growth and development can reduce turnover and increase job satisfaction!

Recognize and Reward Efforts

Celebrate successes! Acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and successes of your staff. This could be through formal recognition programs, such as employee of the month or informal gestures like thank-you notes and shout-outs during team meetings. Recognition boosts morale and encourages continued excellence.

Incentives can be a powerful motivator. Consider implementing reward programs that offer bonuses, extra time off or other perks for meeting specific goals or milestones. Tailor these incentives to what your staff values most.

Create a Supportive Environment

Provide access to counseling services, stress management workshops and peer support groups. Look for ways to keep your staff active and healthy, such as offering a yoga class or offering prizes for exercise.

Remember that creating a culture where mental health is prioritized can make a significant difference in your staff’s well-being.

Encourage a healthy work-life balance by offering flexible scheduling options and ensuring that workloads are manageable. Do you have a staff member who loves working early and leaving early, or maybe would rather come in later and close? See what you can do to accommodate such requests!

A supportive environment in which staff feel their personal lives are respected leads to greater job satisfaction and lower burnout rates, especially when working in early childhood education.

“We can’t take care of other people until we take care of ourselves first,” says Dr. Olivia Remes, a mental health researcher and program director of Leading Mental Health in the Workplace at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Build a Sense of Community

Organize regular team-building activities to strengthen relationships among staff members. These activities can range from professional development retreats to casual social events. Building a sense of camaraderie fosters a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Ensure that your daycare promotes an inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated. Respect and value the unique backgrounds and perspectives of each staff member. An inclusive environment is one in which everyone feels they belong and can contribute effectively.

Be a Servant Leader

As a leader, your behavior sets the tone for the entire daycare. Demonstrate the values and behaviors you wish to see in your staff. So demonstrate positive behavior and show respect, empathy and professionalism in all interactions.

Be approachable and available to your staff. An open-door policy can make a significant difference in how comfortable your team feels coming to you with their ideas and concerns. Your approachability fosters a positive and trusting work environment!

How a Curriculum Designed for ECE Can Help!
